How do I calculate my GPA?

Here’s how to calculate your GPA without the stress. Start by converting each letter grade to its numerical value (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0). If your school uses +/- grades, adjust accordingly like a B+ might be 3.3 or 3.5, depending on their system.

Next, multiply each class’s grade value by its credit hours (e.g., an A in a 3-credit course = 4 x 3 = 12 “quality points”). Add up all your quality points and divide by your total credit hours. That’s your GPA.

Example: If you earned 12 quality points from a 3-credit class and 8 points from a 2-credit class, your GPA is (12 + 8) ÷ (3 + 2) = 4.0.

Two quick notes:

  1. Weighted GPAs (common for honors/AP classes) use a higher scale (e.g., A=5.0), so check if your school does this.
  2. Your institution’s grading policy is the final word, but their online portal or registrar’s office like this example tool might automate this.

Grab your transcript, a calculator, and take it one class at a time. Mistakes happen, so double-check with a teacher or advisor if the number feels off.
